Options for data when travelling
When you visit Cambodia, you can use data in three main ways: buy a local SIM and data pack, use your home operator’s roaming, or rely on Wi‑Fi. Local SIMs are usually the cheapest for more than a few days. Roaming is convenient but can be expensive if you use a lot of data.
Local SIM and data packs
Buy a SIM from Cellcard, Smart, or Metfone at the airport or in town. Then top up and buy a data bundle that matches your stay. See our Getting a SIM card in Cambodia guide for step-by-step advice. Prepaid data packs often offer better value than pay-as-you-go rates.
Roaming from your home country
Check with your operator before you travel. Many offer daily or weekly roaming packs for Cambodia. Turn off data roaming in your phone settings until you buy a pack, to avoid bill shock. Some operators have agreements with Cambodian networks for better rates; ask for a “roaming bundle” or “travel data” option.
Tips to save
- Use Wi‑Fi for large downloads and video calls when available.
- If you stay longer than a week, a local SIM almost always saves money.
- Keep your original SIM in a safe place so you can switch back.
